14th AAS/AIAA Space Flight Mechanics Meeting

8-12 February 2004

The conference will be held at the Wailea Marriott, a gracious oceanfront property in the beautiful resort area of Wailea. Since the month of February is the peak of the high season in Hawaii, it is imperative for attendees to make lodging arrangements as soon as possible. The conference has negotiated a group rate of $159 single/double for a limited number of ocean view rooms. This is an excellent rate for the Wailea area and is also within the maximum lodging allowance for government travelers.

The Wailea Marriott is no longer offering the group rate. Due to the tremendous response to this conference, our room block sold out in November. While the hotel has graciously doubled our room block, we have again sold out. The prevailing rates at the Marriott are currently $228 (garden view) – 318 (ocean front).

Alternate lodging has been arranged at the beautiful Maui Prince Hotel in Makena. This secluded beachfront resort is roughly 3 miles south of the Wailea Marriott, a 5–10 minute drive. Complimentary shuttle service to the Wailea area is provided. The hotel is offering a generous rate of $155 single/double for partial ocean view on a block of 20 rooms. Reservations must be made before 9 January 2004, at which time the block will be released. Then the special rate will be honored on a space available basis. • Identify yourself as part of the AAS (American Astronautical Society) in order to receive the group rate.
• A charge of $40 per person per night applies for a 3^rd person sharing one room.
• Up to 2 children under 18 may stay at no charge when sharing a room with 2 adults and using existing bedding.
• A deposit equal to the room rate and tax for one night is required. The deposit is refundable if the reservation is canceled at least 72 hours prior to scheduled arrival.
• The hotel will offer the group rate three nights before and after the conference based upon availability.

UPDATE

Our room block at the Wailea Marriott is full, but the hotel will continue to offer the highly advantageous group rate until they sell out, which is anticipated and may occur before the rate cut-off date. We will post a list of alternate lodging options if it becomes necessary, though attendees are cautioned that available options may be limited and/or expensive.

AREA DESCRIPTION

Wailea is an elegant, master-planned resort consisting of highly touted resort hotels, luxurious condominiums and private homes, spectacularly scenic golf courses that host PGA events, and an upscale retail shopping and fine dining center. Nestled in the rain shadow of 10,023 ft Haleakala, the area enjoys the sunny and balmy conditions characteristic of South Maui. Temperatures in February are usually in the 70s. Fronting the azure Pacific are five lovely crescent-shaped golden sand beaches and a wonderfully scenic 1.5-mile paved pathway connecting the resorts and beaches. Sightings of humpback whales are common along this walk in February. Offshore are the neighbor islands of Lanai, Molokai, Kahoolawe, and Molokini, a crescent-shaped islet.
