11th AAS/AIAA Space Flight Mechanics Meeting

February 11-15, 2001

Radisson Hotel

Santa Barbara, California

ABSTRACT DEADLINE: September 15, 2000

The eleventh annual AAS/AIAA Space Flight Mechanics Meeting will be held at the Radisson Hotel, Santa Barbara, California, on February 11-15, 2001. This meeting is cosponsored by the American Astronautical Society (AAS) and the American Institute of Aeronautics and Astronautics (AIAA). The meeting is organized by the AAS Space Flight Mechanics Technical Committee and the AIAA Astrodynamics Technical Committee.

Papers are sought from all areas of astrodynamics, including but not limited to:

This conference is one of the first in the new millennium. Over 30 years ago the movie "2001: A Space Odyssey" depicted space travel and related themes. We encourage technical papers on space flight mechanics subjects that were touched on in the movie and the book by Arthur C. Clarke. These include themes of human space travel, space stations, lunar and interplanetary flight, artificial intelligence, and others. If sufficient related papers are received, then they may be collected into a special technical session.

Papers will be accepted on the basis of extended abstracts of approximately 1000 words. Abstracts must contain at least 500 words. These abstracts should contain a clear and concise statement of the problem addressed and the results obtained as well as a few supporting figures and/or tables. The abstracts should have a cover page that contains the names, affiliations, mail addresses, telephone numbers, fax numbers, and email addresses of all authors, with one author designated as the primary point of contact. Be sure to include the email address of the point of contact. The deadline for submitting abstracts is September 15, 2000. Notification of acceptance will be given to authors by email or postal mail by November 1, 2000. Author instructions will be sent by email or postal mail and placed on the AAS web site at that time. Authors should then confirm that they will complete the paper for the conference. Final manuscripts are required at the time of the meeting. We encourage authors to supply their session chairs with a copy of their papers two weeks before the meeting. A "no paper no podium" rule will be in effect for all presentations. Authors whose papers are not available in printed form at the time of the meeting will not be allowed to present their paper.

In addition, proposals are solicited from prospective session organizers for appropriate special sessions such as panel discussions, invited speakers/papers, workshops, and mini-symposia. Prospective special session, workshop, and/or mini-symposium organizers must submit a proposal consisting of a title, brief description (approximately 500 words), list of speakers, and the titles of their presentations, or a list of activities.

Copies of the abstracts or special sessions/workshopproposals should be submitted to both technical chairs, Dr. Louis D'Amario and Mr. Lester Sackett, by email, fax, or mail at the addresses listed below by September 15, 2000. We strongly encourage submittals by email. Include the abstract as a Microsoft Word file and/or a pdf file.

The AAS Space Flight Mechanics Technical Committee also announces the John V. Breakwell Student Travel Award. This award provides a maximum of $1000 to cover travel expenses for U.S. and Canadian students planning to attend the AAS/AIAA Space Flight Mechanics Meeting. For further details about applications for the award as well as continually updated information concerning the conference, please see the AAS Space Flight Mechanics Committee web site at www.space-flight.org.
