CONJUNCTION/INTERFERENCE BETWEEN LEO AND GEO COMSATS

T.J. Lang - The Aerospace Corporation

Abstract

For a ground station communicating with a GEO satellite, interference may occur if a LEO or MEO satellite using the same frequency passes close enough to the station-GEO line of sight. Two methods have been used to determine how often these interference events occur and how long they last. A numerical simulation was used to find these events for a variety of station latitudes, GEO elevation angles, interference angles, and LEO/MEO satellite altitudes and inclinations. Secondly, a first order approximation was analytically derived, which fits the numerical data and allows predictions of interference probability and duration for any ground station, GEO, and LEO/MEO satellite combination.
