System Modes Based Dynamics and Control of Multibody Systems:Analysis and Applications

V. J. Modi, University of Britsh Columbia, Vancourver, Canada

Abstract

Some of the challenges encountered in studying dynamics and control of large space structures are reviewed. To begin with, distinctive features of a relatively general formulation, applicable to a large class of systems and characterized by interconnected flexible members, are summarized. This is followed by the discussion aimed at limitation of the component mode discretization methodology using a simple illustrative example. Next, an approach to dynamics and control of the system accounting for complete nonlinearities is touched upon and an efficient algorithm for the performance evaluation established. Results, based on several examples of contemporary interest, suggest that both internal and external disturbances can drive the systems unstable if uncontrolled. However, the FLT based nonlinear control procedure is quite successful in establishing an acceptable level of performance.
