Spin Decay Of Small Spacecraft In Elliptic Orbits*

Adrian J. Markwell** and Graham G. Swinerd***

Abstract

This paper describes the work carried out at Southampton University investigating the effects of aerodynamic and induced eddy current torques on the spin rate of a small satellite in GTO. Results given here indicate that the spacecraft orientation is a major factor governing the spin decay in such orbits, and because of this, adequate functioning of the control system is imperative to ensure the success of the mission.
